大學指考、學測及全民英檢中高級的英文字彙屬於基本且必需學會的單字，

但光熟悉這些單字要閱讀一般普通的英文文章、書籍、報紙、雜誌，字彙量仍

嫌相當不足，所以我想將能流利閱讀英文所需的單字，大致很完整地整理出來

，而我所列的是全民英檢中高級以上的單字，但絕不列冷僻字、罕用字。

The refugees subsist on a diet of rice and vegetables.

The villagers subsist primarily on rice and fish.

Farming is their means of subsistence.    

                     2. 賴以活命的食物或金錢

He lives on subsistence wages; he has no money left over.

subsistence crop生存作物 (種植僅供自身食用，不供出售的作物)

subsistence farming / agriculture 自給性農業 (收成僅夠自己食用)

Teenagers often have voracious appetites.

                     2. 求知慾極強的

I’m a voracious reader.

She has always had a voracious appetite for reading.

buff [bKf] n. 1. 迷；愛好者  

Ask her anything about movies; she’s a big film buff.

           2. 淺黃褐色

He wore a buff jacket.

           3. in the buff : 裸體的；一絲不掛的 without any clothes; nude

She likes to sunbathe in the buff.
