為什麼絕大多數台灣人無法流利閱讀英文?
如果外國人學習中文的方式是:台灣小學程度的中文字彙學十幾年還沒學完,看中文文章只看簡易版和專為外國人寫的文章,很少或幾乎不看一般普通的中文書籍和報章雜誌,講中文只能講簡單基本的對話,沒辦法深入表達意見,中文寫作只會寫基本的句子,或寫的句子根本是錯誤連篇,亂寫一通。如果將以上改成台灣人學習英文的方式,大概就是如此。
首先,這不是台灣人的錯,因為台灣人的腦袋容量不輸人,實在是台灣的英語教育爛得可以,爛到無法被任何國家超越,所以台灣人的英文能力總是輸給地表上大多數像樣的國家,甚至也輸給不少發展較落後的國家,在全球的英文水平評比,台灣一直被編在放牛班。
台灣人為何無法流利閱讀英文? 1. 字彙能力太弱,大多數台灣人懂的英文單字量太少,也沒全面瞭解單字的用法。2. 文法句型理解不透徹,所以大多數台灣人寫出來的英文句子看了會讓人嚇好幾跳。3. 閱讀量遠遠不足,許多人英文文章看得太少,甚至只看簡易版英文文章,這樣的能力要閱讀一般英文書籍和報章雜誌,只能以龜速進行,要理解一篇文章總要花很長的時間。4. 許多台灣人學英文太混,從教育體系、學校本身帶頭混,英文學習速度緩慢到難以置信,全球罕見(所以英文能力也是全球倒數),美國小學程度的英文要學幾十年,美國初中程度的英文也要學幾十年,美國高中程度的英文要學多少年?—— 今生已不可能學完,所以只能下輩子再好好學。
台灣學生能學好英語的絕對肯定只有少數人,學英文需要用功加上方法正確,所以一開始學英文便需就戰鬥位置,精神要專注,學習火力要強大,這樣不出幾年英文必然可以學得不錯,否則像台灣這種要死不活的英語教育,可能學到下輩子英文還沒學會。
對一大票英語爽讀者,對他們講什麼學習動機都是白費唇舌,因為他們學英語只是在浪費時間、金錢而已,但我想給用心的學習者幾點建議:
1. 用功的學生要學好英語,一開始就要謹慎尋找注重實效,能讓他們真正獲益的教師。最好能跟幾個同樣用功的學生一起學習,或乾脆找好的英語家教,不要跟一些將英語當成學好玩的人一同鬼混。
2. 台灣教育體制提供的英語教育形同廢物,所以國中、高中的英語課程能早點學完就盡早學完,例如台灣有少數小學生就已將高中英文課程學得比許多高中生還要好。
3. 英文字彙能力要持續有恒地不斷累積,文法句型要徹底理解,英文文章要由簡入深,大量閱讀,直到能流利閱讀一般英文書籍和報章雜誌為止。
我們大多數人在中學,甚至在小學時已能流利閱讀一般中文書籍和報章雜誌,同樣地美國人在中學,甚至在小學時也能流利閱讀一般英文書籍和報章雜誌。英語對我們是外語,而且我們也沒有很好的學英語環境,但真正有心學英語者,最好能在大學時代或最遲在25、26歲或30歲之前達到流利閱讀一般英文文章的目標。用好的學習方法,下功夫勤學就對了。
